The Virgin Islands Lottery (US) is the only North American lottery that is held outside the mainland or Puerto Rico.

The Virgin Islands Lottery (US) was established as far back as 1937, and in 1971 it became an independent agency of the territorial government. Its headquarters are on St. Thomas, in Charlotte Amelie, and it is a member of both the Caribbean Lottery, in which other islands participate, and the Multi-State Lottery Association.

Games Offered

The main game that the Virgin Islands Lottery (US) offers is Powerball, and it is the smallest United States lottery to do so. This is also true for online keno in Canada players and Mega Millions. Players can also choose from Pick 3, Pick 4, Doubles and the Traditional Virgin Islands Lottery.

Some games are played within the Islands, while others can be played from anywhere in the world. Powerball, of course, works the same in the Virgin Islands Lottery (US) as in all the other Districts and States that offer this game. For all games, players need to be 18 or older.

Powerball in the Virgin Islands

Jackpots for the game start off at 40 million US Dollars, and they rollover every time the top prize isn’t won. The Rollover increases the pot by 10 million US Dollars at a time, so the jackpot figures are awe-inspiring in the true sense of the word. The overall odds of winning something in this lottery are 1 in 31.85.

As always, the Powerball numbers are drawn from 2 separate machines. The first 5 are drawn from a pool of 59 white balls and the 6th, or Powerball, from the other pool of 35 red balls. The draws take place twice a week, on Wednesday and Saturday nights. The results are broadcast and can also be found online and in local newspapers.

Players can choose to pick the numbers of the 5 white balls and the Powerball themselves, or to have them electronically generated. It’s also possible to play online as well as on land, with authorised online sales companies.

Powerplay

For a little extra money, players can use the Powerplay facility which will increase any non jackpot wins by 2, 3 or 4 times, depending on what Powerball payout you won.

For example, a non-jackpot second prize of 1 million US Dollars will be doubled to 2 million when the Powerplay function is activated, and a third-level prize of 10,000 US Dollars will be quadrupled.

Claiming Your Prize

The Virgin Islands Lottery (US) pays its winners out in annuity payments and in lump sums, depending on what is preferred. Once you’ve made your claim, you’ll have 60 days to make this important decision. The annuity option is paid in 30 instalments over 29 years.

Players who have won up to 1199 US Dollars can claim their payouts from Lottery offices in the Virgin Islands, while larger amounts must be collected from the head office directly. Players on St. Thomas and St Croix Islands can go to their local Lottery offices, and reputable online companies such as The Lotter will safeguard all of your transactions for you. This makes claiming your rewards as easy as winning them when you register right here.
